April – Monte Carlo Masters, Monaco
The first of the year’s main French Riviera events is the Monte Carlo Masters which every year sees 56 of the world’s greatest professional tennis players battle it out for the illustrious championship at the prestigious Monte-Carlo Country Club. Take a Monaco helicopter transfer to the beautiful location on the waterfront, and enjoy one of the year’s most highly anticipated events. Spectators can hope to see the sport’s most decorated stars including Rafael Nadal, Novak Djokovic and Roger Federer at what is considered by many as the year’s first significant international clay court tennis tournament.
May – Roses and Plants Festival, St Jean Cap Ferrat
Every year, the beautiful peninsula of St Jean Cap Ferrat welcomes guests to the Villa Ephrussi de Rothschild for a two day French Riviera event extravaganza of stunning flower and rose arrangements. Over 6,000 visitors attend along with twenty professional exhibitors from around the world, filling the estate’s nine themed gardens with plenty of colour and a lively atmosphere.
May – Cannes Film Festival, Cannes
Of all the French Riviera events, the Cannes Film festival is surely one of the most popular, with the glamorous seaside town welcoming some of Hollywood’s biggest stars onto the famous red carpets of the Palais des Festivals. Representatives from over 60 countries appear across the 65 pavilions of the ‘Village International’ while the ‘Marché du Film’ boasts more than 10,500 participants and 1,500 film screenings including open air séances.
May– Monte Carlo Grand Prix, Monaco
During the weekend following the film festival, take a helicopter from Cannes to Monaco for the Principality’s most celebrated annual event: the Monte Carlo Grand Prix. Watch as the world’s finest Formula 1 drivers compete for the Grand Prix Championship upon the narrow winding roads of Monaco. There simply is nothing quite like it, and is surely a French Riviera event not to be missed.
June-October – Annonciade Museum, St Tropez
For a long time, St Tropez has boasted a close affinity with art of the Avant-Garde, hosting some of the most famous names in modernist genres such as Pablo Picasso among others. The Annonciade Museum, St Tropez’s primary art museum, celebrates this carefully nurtured relationship with a spectacular contemporary art exhibition that lasts several months during the summer season.
July – International Polo Cup St Tropez, St Tropez
The Polo Club St Tropez has only existed since 1998, yet is already one of the most highly reputed polo clubs in the world. Further recent additions have seen the club expand its premises to include a new training track and 350 more stables. However it’s greatest feature is surely the International Polo Cup that takes place annually upon the manicured lawns of Haras de Gassin, a fine French Riviera event to attend. Elsewhere, Cannes also plays host to an excellent annual equestrian spectacle: the International Jumping Festival at the Stade des Hespérides.
July – Jazz à Juan, Juan les Pins
From the many jazz inspired French Riviera events, Jazz à Juan is perhaps the most popular. In the Gould Pine Grove’s intimate outdoor setting, some of the world’s greatest musicians including recent performers Carlos Santana, Stevie Wonder and Joss Stone take to the stage in a celebration of music. Alternatively across the Côte d’Azur, the Ramatuelle Jazz Festival, the Nice Jazz Festival and the Music and Theatre festival are some other examples of fine musical French Riviera events that are received with similar success.
