Resort Review: Chamonix

Site of the first Winter Olympic Games in 1924, Chamonix is one of the most famous and visited resorts in all of Europe. Dominated by the imposing edifice of Mont Blanc, Chamonix lies in the commune Haute-Savoie department in the Rhone- Alpes region of France. Whilst the principle town is of the same name, ‘Chamonix’ is often used to refer to the whole valley starting in Le Fayet and running for 28km to Switzerland. Villages along the valley include, Servaz, Les Houches, Les Bossons, Les Praz, Les Tires, Argentiere, Montroc and Le Tour, all of which can be easily accessed by a Chamonix helicopter transfer.

Chamonix is a winter sport enthusiasts Mecca, not only can visitors enjoy some exceptional skiing terrain but they can also try ice climbing, sleigh riding, cross country skiing, hot air ballooning, huskey sledding, ice skating, indoor climbing, paragliding, snow-shoe walking and helicopter tours with a trusted, local Chamonix Helicopter Company, to name but a few. However as great as it is to have these options those visiting Chamonix this winter season will only have one thing on their mind, and that’s the 700km of piste to explore.

The Chamonix valley is both huge and daunting and has some of the most exhilarating and stunning runs in the world. Catering for all standards Chamonix has one of the longest ski seasons, stretching from December through to May. A Mont Blanc lift pass will allow skiers to cover 8 local and 13 regional ski areas. For those seeking a little respite from the mountain but would like to get out of their luxury chalet, Chamonix has an impressive collection of shops, bars and restaurants to browse and stop in for a warming chocolate chaud or something stronger.
